Our Mission

Journeys of Life  provides the community with resources, gifts, and inspiration to explore personal growth, life issues, spirituality and alternatives needed by all who travel this Journey called Life.  Journeys offers a haven in this hectic world to those who need it by serving individuals, organizations and institutions throughout the tri-state area.  Our mission is to facilitate options for self discovery, new pathways and options to enhance your personal Journey.

About Journeys of Life

Journeys of Life is tucked away on a quiet side street in a five block residential neighborhood shopping district known as Shadyside, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Opened in 1989, in an 800 square-foot second floor walkup, the focus was primarily books about life issues, 12 step recovery, and gifts that would support those topics.  Journeys quickly outgrew the original location and in 1991 moved to the present location on Bellefonte Street, a two story building, originally a flower shop, with 2,000 square feet of selling space and lots of windows and skylights. The added space allowed for expansion of topics covered in the second floor book department,  while the first floor evolved as an eclectic gift shop. Journeys of Life is a store with product that inspires, delights, educates, brings meaning and joy.

In November 2011 Journeys of Life was destroyed by an early morning electrical fire.  The building and its contents were declared a total loss.  Through the determination of the staff, owners, community and many friends near and far, the store was relocated around the corner for six months within two weeks of the fire.  In May of 2012 Journeys returned to the totally renovated building on Bellefonte St where it remains today.

Journeys of Life is a proud member of

The Shadyside Chamber of Commerce

Our neighborhood Chamber of Commerce is made up of  businesses and organizations in the Shadyside/Ellsworth/Highland corridor. Journeys of Life has been an active member since 1990.  Jean serves on the Board of Directors and is currently a vice president. The Chamber is a non-profit group that promotes their neighborhood businesses, residents and non-profit organizations.  Yearly favorite events are the Summer Music Jams benefiting Cystic Fibrosis, The Annual Summer Sidewalk Sale, and the Summer Arts Festival.  The Chamber of Commerce was featured in an American Express video promotion for Small Business Saturday because of their area wide support of SBS.  Journeys sponsors the Blessing of the Animals in October and coordinates the Great Shadyside Yard Sale each spring.  You can find more information about the members and events of the SCCC at Think Shadyside.  Be sure to sign up for the Chamber Newsletter to get monthly information about happenings in Shadyside.

Journeys Community Partnerships

Journeys began their partnership with POWER the first year we opened.  Through our  CD Demo Sales we have contributed over $6,000 to programs directly supporting the women at POWER.  In addition we collected gently used recovery books for the half-way house library.
Journeys is a drop-off collection center for used cell phones, power cords and chargers.  The Women’s Shelter recycles them and uses the proceeds to fund programs for women staying at the shelter.  Bring in a single phone or a box from your office.
Journeys contributes to the many Gateway programs through sales of books and gifts at various yearly functions.  They are an anchor at the Annual Recovery Breakfast in November.  Jean serves as a member of the Board of Directors and  chairs the Program Committee.
We financially support TNA, a private, independently funded, college prep school in Stanton Heights for low income students who could not otherwise afford the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive, academic environment.  Journeys sponsor the annual Angels on Walnut event every December.
In addition to these special organizations Journeys of Life supports other local groups by offering our time, talent and treasure including

  • The Animal Rescue League and Wild Life Center
  • East End Cooperative Ministry Men’s Shelter Program
  • Shadyside Boys and Girls Club
